- Consider buying health and earth-friendly low or zero volatile organic compound (VOC) paints.
- Replace one light bulb with a compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulb.
- For window treatments, use sustainable materials such as linen, cotton, wool, bamboo, and silk.
- If you have carpeting that is there to stay, especially newer carpet, throw a natural-fiber area rug (sisal is a good example) over it to limit the amount of chemicals that are released into the air.
- Purchasing antiques or second-hand furniture is a great, earth-friendly alternative to purchasing new furniture.
- Buy art and accessories from local stores and artists. Also, look for accessories that are made from natural materials.
