ChairsAsk The Curator
"Fancy" chairs, also known as Hitchcock chairs, were the Model T of chairs in the early 19th century. These mass-produced chairs gave middle class families the luxury of attractive, uniform seating for guests. The chairs took their name from the Fancy era of American decorative arts. Visual exuberance and imagination were hallmarks of the new democracy. Everyday objects were decorated with bold patterns, brilliant colors and animated forms. The best-known fancy chairs were produced by Lambert Hitchcock in Connecticut from 1825 to 1852.
